Get to school without a Car Day

Sponsored 'Get to school without a Car Day' on 6th December.

An initiative by Liz Hynam

The aim is for parents to see this as an opportunity to be creative and organised about how we get across Bristol to and from the Steiner school without a car. I hope that having done it once for this special day, parents will do the ride again maybe once a week initially and perhaps more often in the spring and summer. My aim is to do this cycle ride with my daughter Florie twice a week leaving our car at home.

Families are encouraged to make contact with others in their area to:

  • Cycle together in Crocobikes

  • Take turns in rota to lead a Crocobike, or liaise with more experienced cyclists to join up informally for moral support and share ideas for quieter routes they've discovered.

  • Liaise with others to set up e g walking buses or part train part walk or the supervision of rotas.

The proceeds will be divided equally into two funds:

  • Funding initiatives within the school to encourage cycling (such as cost of having parents participate in 'Guided Ride Training' which will enable them to lead their children and hopefully others' children (in a 'Crocobikes') confidently and safely and /or purchasing of reflective jackets with school logo on. - serving also as a marketing device!)

  • To fund the 'adoption' of a mountain gorilla through the Diane Fossey Fund. (as this was the charity which inspired Florie and her animal loving peers to take part!)

We will be rewarding participants' efforts with a breakfast of pancakes, juice and coffee and are hoping to have a Bike Doctor and bike swap sessions before the event.
