National Home Energy Rating

The forthcoming EU Directive on the Energy Performance of Buildings will have a significant effect on professionals within the built environment.

The NHER is the scheme for energy efficiency professionals working in the residential sector. Over 2,000 members, both individuals and organisations, enjoy a range of high quality services, including software, training, accreditation and information.

The NHER works with its members to help provide quality assured energy ratings, energy efficiency advice, tackle fuel poverty and develop local and regional energy strategies.

This site provides an important source of information on how the Directive will be implemented in the UK, especially for dwellings.

Energy Saving Trust

The Energy Saving Trust is a non-profit organisation, funded by government and the private sector. Set up after the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, they have two main goals:

  • To achieve the sustainable use of energy
  • To cut carbon dioxide emissions, one of the key contributors to climate change

Federation of Authorised Energy Rating Organisations

The Faero Competent Persons Scheme will give all building control bodies confidence in knowing that the complete system of qualified Assessors will involve energy experts who are properly monitored to ensure the Government's guidelines are being fully met

Faero's competent person scheme launched on 2nd April, 2007. Whilst Faero's systems were in development, the current AEROs continued to offer their own systems to register SAP Assessors as Authorised SAP Assessors, and this will continue for a short transitional period. Each AERO provides some degree of training and a test of competence prior to registering you as an Authorised SAP Assessor, but at present, their systems are all different.

The organisations that become members of Faero's scheme will all agree to operate to a common set of standards, including a common test of competence. It is anticipated that most of the current AEROs will sign up to Faero's scheme, as will a number of the current approved software providers. So far, Elmhurst Energy Systems and NES/NHER have demonstrated their compliance with Faero's standards and became members on 2nd April.
